Pastoral Perspectives: “The Theology of Suffering”

The C.O. and Eliza Greene Lecture Series presents Dr. Marva Dawn on “The Theology of Suffering” to be held on Tuesday, March 23 beginning at 9:30a.m.in Blanton Auditorium, located on the main level of Harmick Hall at Gardner-Webb University. Dr. Dawn is the Teaching Fellow in Spiritual Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She is an internationally renowned theologian, author, and educator with Christians Equipped for Ministry who has preached and taught at seminaries and other religious forums throughout the United States and all over the world. An expert teacher in worship, Bible, community life, ethics, homiletics, and spiritual formation, Dr. Dawn continues to share her wisdom in over 20 books and 15 articles, some of which have won awards and others translated into Chinese, Korean, and Portuguese.

Dr. Dawn earned her Bachelor of Arts degrees in Theology/English and Church Music/Secondary Education from Concordia Teachers College. She earned her first of four Master’s degrees in English at the University of Idaho. In addition, she completed a Master’s of Divinity degree in New Testament from Western Evangelical Seminary and a Master’s of Theology degree in Old Testament from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary. She earned a Master’s degree and Doctorate in Christian Ethics and the Scriptures from the University of Notre Dame.

The lectureship will begin with registration and refreshments in Hamrick Hall’s Blanton Auditorium at 9:30a.m. Followed by introductions, Dr. Marva Dawn will bring remarks from 10:00a.m. to12:00p.m.and then lunch will be served in Ritch Banquet Hall, located on the lower level of the Dover Campus Center. A book signing will ensue from 1:00p.m.to 1:30p.m. Dr. Dawn will conclude with additional comments at 7:00p.m.in Dover Chapel.

The C.O. and Eliza Greene Endowed Lectureship was established in 1993 in honor of the Reverend and Mrs. C.O. Greene and the legacy of excellence which characterized his ministry. The lecture series is directed by the M. Christopher White School of Divinity’s Pittman Center for Congregational Enrichment and funded by family members, friends, and members of churches where the Reverend Greene served as pastor. The lectureship addresses various dimensions of pastoral ministry.
