Music and Meter

In the second of three Joyce Compton Brown Lecture Series events, Dr. Jhon Akers, esteemed Spanish Classical Guitarist, will perform several selections on March 2, 2010 at 7:00p.m.in the Fireside Lounge located on the main level of the Dover Campus Center of Gardner-Webb University. In addition, he will bring comments on his inspiration, Carl Sanburg and this poet’s appreciation for classical guitar. Akers first became interested in Sandburg after reading his poem, The Guitar, Some Definitions. Since then, he has developed a program which honors Sandburg of which he states, “ It has given me a chance to play and recite and dramatize and narrate, and in the last nine years or so I have presented this dozens upon dozens of times.” When he is not serenading audiences with the sequence of stringed sounds at such venues as the Carl Sanburg Home in Flat Rock North Carolina, he serves as Associate Professor of Modern Languages and Assistant Director of Cultural Events at Wofford College.
