Gardner-Webb's Evgeny Slesarev has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Tennis Player of the Week, while teammate Roman Piftor has been named The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week, the League announced today. Slesarev, a senior from Krasnoyarsk, Russia, led the way for Gardner-Webb this past week as he picked up 3 wins in singles and doubles play against Davidson and UNC Greensboro. At Davidson on Feb. 3, Slesarev defeated Eric Noble in the No. 1 singles position, 6-4, 6-7, 10-7. He later teamed with senior Rafael Altmayer to defeat the team of Noble and Joe Schafer, 9-7 in the No. 1 doubles spot. After falling in the first set at UNC Greensboro on Feb. 6, Slesarev rallied to knock off the No. 9 ranked player in the ITA Carolinas Region and reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year, Orcun Seyrek, 1-7, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (7).
